Amazon Removed the Buy Box Eligibility Gate
For years, winning the Featured Offer — the box most sellers still call the Buy Box — was a two-stage contest. Stage one was a pass/fail check on your seller performance. Only offers from sellers who cleared it entered stage two, where Amazon ranked the surviving offers on price, delivery speed, and service.
According to Amazon's announcement as reported in July 2026, stage one is being removed. Amazon's stated reasoning is that the separate seller eligibility step is no longer delivering additional value to customers. Every offer now goes straight into the ranking, and performance metrics act as inputs to that ranking rather than as a gate you must clear first.
"Removing the gate doesn't make performance stop mattering. It changes it from a lock on the door into a weight on the scale — and a weight can be outweighed by a better price and faster delivery."

Amazon has been explicit that the selection logic is unchanged: it will continue to evaluate offers and choose the Featured Offer on the criteria most important to customers, such as competitive pricing, delivery speed, and performance. Reported rollout began in the US at the start of July 2026, with the EU and UK following from around July 20, 2026, and other stores on a gradual schedule expected to complete by the end of 2026. Amazon has stated that no seller action is required and that existing offers are included automatically.
Two Stages Became One
The mechanical difference is small to describe and large in effect. Here is the shape of it as reported in July and August 2026.
| Element | Before the change | After the change (as reported) |
|---|---|---|
| Seller performance | A standalone pass/fail eligibility check | A weighted input inside a single ranking |
| Who enters the ranking | Only offers from sellers who passed the gate | Every offer on the listing |
| Selection criteria | Price, delivery speed, service quality | Unchanged — Amazon states selection logic is not changing |
| Rollout | — | US from early July 2026; EU and UK from around July 20, 2026; other stores gradually through end of 2026 |
| Seller action required | — | None — existing offers are included automatically |
As reported in July and August 2026, summarising Amazon's own announcement. Amazon has not published a country-by-country rollout calendar, so the change may reach your marketplace at a different time from the dates above. Amazon can revise the rollout or the criteria at any time — confirm behaviour against your own Featured Offer data in Seller Central rather than assuming.
What It Actually Means for Your Pricing
“No action required” is true in the literal sense and misleading in the practical one. Nothing breaks if you do nothing, but the competitive field on your listings changes, and that is worth five deliberate moves.
Your Post-Gate Featured Offer Checklist
Baseline your Featured Offer percentage now
Pull your Featured Offer share by ASIN before the rollout finishes in your marketplace. Without a baseline you will not be able to separate the effect of this change from ordinary seasonality when you look back in November.
Expect a deeper field on multi-seller listings
If your ASINs are shared with resellers, offers that previously never reached the ranking can now reach it. On single-seller private-label ASINs, where you are the only offer, the practical effect should be close to nothing.
Re-examine your repricing floor, not just your rule
A wider field tempts a race downward. Recalculate your true floor from landed cost, fees, returns, and advertising before you loosen anything, so the price you are willing to defend is a number rather than a reflex.
Keep investing in the inputs that still count
Delivery speed and performance remain part of the ranking. Faster fulfilment, cleaner order defect metrics, and reliable in-stock rates are now competitive advantages rather than compliance checkboxes — which arguably makes them worth more, not less.
Watch advertising efficiency, not only organic sales
Sponsored Products traffic that lands on a listing where you do not hold the Featured Offer converts differently. If your Featured Offer share moves, check ACOS and conversion rate on the affected ASINs before you conclude the campaigns themselves got worse.
The last point is the one most likely to be misdiagnosed this quarter. A drop in Featured Offer share shows up first as an advertising problem, because the ads keep spending while the conversion rate quietly falls. Check the offer before you rebuild the campaign.
